Here is a brief summary a AusBone what it is and what it will become. I have posted this after requests for information on the project, the current reference site is http://ausbone.wire.net.au AusBone is constituted as an independent association, which runs as a non-for-profit UN-listed public company, AusBone Incorporated. Membership of AusBone is open to all commercial network providers, research networks and other non-profit "peering" associations. Membership is open to any of the above groups regardless of size,creed,color etc.... AusBone is not affiated with any network provider, Telco etc, it provides the connected member with a equal vote regardless of the members size/status etc. The following is included in your monthly membership fees, these benefits are provided to all AusBone POP's 1. Proxy Linking - by use of sibling / peer caches. AusBone members are encouraged to peer with other members both at local POP's and external ones. AusBone will allow for full-national peering, not just your local POP participants. 2. UseNet News Feed will be provide as part of the monthly feed. 3. Some co-linking/listing, sponsoring of Archive/Mirrors (Ie. Tucows, *ix OS) 4. Direct connections into industry standard download sites like Netscape and Microsoft 5. Centralised member IRC and Games servers 6. Linking of current Australian Peering projects, allowing these peering points to access AusBone via zero-cost routes and vise-versa. The above will be provided as Stage 1 of the AusBone project, future stages of the project will include international peering and bandwidth sales. Is AusBone a reality? Yes, AusBone has approximately 20 members, mostly from the ISP community. Announcements will be made shortly of what POP installations.
