Hi Jeff, Yes WebCentral was required to pay the bounty for having a newbie customer removed from the SORBS list. No degree of explanation was sufficient for exemption from this $50 'charity donation'. Further, it's not a charity of "your" choice. It's the T3-v-McNicol Defence Trust. A charity of Matthew Sullivan's choice I've since been told Matthew Sullivan who runs SORBS can be contacted at his place of employment at the University of Queensland. This probably also explains why a number of .au educational institutions use the list Perhaps verbally explaining your case might prove a better alternative for you and/or your customer? So, SORBS seems to require a payment of US$50 *per spam received* (as judged by them) to remove an IP range from their "SPAM DB" database, which seems to be in use by a number of .au educational institutions. The $50 goes directly to a charity of your choice. Is independent extortion a reasonable tactic in the fight against spam? Should educational institutions support or use this kind of service? Some excerpts: "Third and finally, if you are really not a spammer, or you are truly reformed, de-listing is relatively easy. You pay US$50 to a charity or trust approved by, and not connected with, SORBS for each spam received relating to the listing (This is known and refered to as the SORBS 'fine')." "Comment has been made that SORBS should setup a trust and periodically pay the 'fines' to the nominated charity(s). This is currently not an option, pending legal advice, as it is likely this would cross the legal boundary of extortion or blackmail." http://www.dnsbl.sorbs.net/SpamDBFAQ.html Thanks, - Jeff -- Systems Administrator Flow Communications p: +612 9263 5052 f: +612 9263 5050 ---- email "unsubscribe aussie-isp" to m a j o r d o m o @ a u s s i e . n e t to be removed. ---- email "unsubscribe aussie-isp" to m a j o r d o m o @ a u s s i e . n e t to be removed. |
