thanks to everyone who replied.  I've decided to go with the offer from Mark
Russell (isp.net.au) - $88/month for 512/128 unlimited and my own /24
routed...and there's a fast debian mirror less than 5ms away :-)

the price is OK, but the main reason i chose this offer was because mark's been
around on the net scene for about as long as i have - so i feel pretty
confident that i won't have to go through this hassle again in 6 or 12 months.
having seen many ISPs come and go over the years, that's very important to
me....far more important than price, anyway.

ps: to those who tried to sell me a volume-charged business DSL service - why?
i made it pretty clear that i was after a residential service with a fixed
monthly cost.  i'm not in the least bit interested in a variable cost service -
i can't bugdet for that and i certainly don't want to be stuck with huge bills
every time there's a new windows virus flooding the net (i.e. nearly every
day).
