Michael, It's true that the US invented, developed and funded the creation of the Internet. (Same with Teflon, I think.) However the Internet today is not the same thing that it once was, and the US no longer pull all the strings. If the US government started tweaking root servers, the rest of the world /could/ just ignore them, and use different, untampered servers.; they wouldn't, but they could. If the US government wanted root servers to be tweaked, I think it would be made so no matter who signed the pay cheques. The issue with name servers is a smoke-screen, which attracts attention, ironically, to broader governance issues for the Internet.
