One could argue that the network has grown a tad since then. One could also postulate that the network DNS servers are rapidly becoming redundant, except for http and smtp. Anyway, the Domain Name System (DNS) was invented by Paul Mockapetris from the University of Southern California in 1983. http://www.nominum.com/bio.php?id=2 Here's the wikipedia entry. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Mockapetris IANA looks after ip addresses. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IANA ICANN looks after DNS. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Corporation_for_Assigned_Names_and_Numbers <excerpt> The contract for ICANN came from the US Department of Commerce and was "sole sourced", which means no-one else (such as the Open Root Server Confederation which was also formed at the time to bid on the contract) was able to submit a bid to perform the task. These tasks include managing the assignment of domain names and IP addresses. To date, much of its work has concerned the introduction of seven new generic top-level domains. Its activities, however, are very controversial. </excerpt> Ultimate control of both falls to the United States Department of Commerce. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Department_of_Commerce and that ladies and gentlemen, is the crux of the matter. The reality of course, is that as with all monopolies this one too shall fall. It's simply a matter of time.
