Subject: [Oz-ISP] how far can an ISDN Sbus port cable run?
No followups recorded.

Hi everyone,

I'm looking to relocate my router as one option to re-organising placement
of some gear. I can't move the Telstra stuff as the MDF is in one room and
I want to keep Telstra's gear located in the same room. One reason for
this is that all the stuff exposed to the unprotected copper from the
street cabling can stay with the MDF.

A question that's arisen out of this is how far can an ISDN Sbus interface
cable run? If I move the router, it'll be located about 20 metres from the
Telstra gear instead of in the same cabinet (cable less than half a
metre!). Is that going to be a problem? Is there anything wrong with using
a shielded cat-5 cable to cover the distance? I don't know if either the
Cisco S/T ports or Telstra's ISDN boxes actually do anything with the
shield in a standard RJ45 network cable, or even if the wiring is anything
like that used for twisted-pair ethernet, but that's what I'm aiming to
use.

What are the pro's and con's of this approach?

Thanks,

Craig.
