i really don't get this. is it some kind of snobbishness or what? it
certainly doesn't serve any practical purpose.

what's the point? it's still going to be a public list no matter what
restrictions there are on subscribing. as soon as you post anything
to the list, you effectively lose all control over distribution,
duplication, and archiving of it. and if you think otherwise, you're
just fooling yourself. a hasty post could embarass you next week or it
could turn up and bite you on the arse in 3 years time. or whenever.

the list is still not going to be suitable for confidential
conversations. so, what's the point?

that's an interesting to comment to make for an anonymous entity known
only by the name of "Admin - Ozwide Internet".

i suspect that most of us actually prefer mailing lists to crappy forums
- email clients are much faster and more convenient than browsing some
remote site. having to go and visit a forum is time consuming and a
PITA, whereas mail just comes in all by itself and you can get around to
reading and dealing with it when you have time.

anyone here should have the skills to set up a list as i did. if they
don't, then they don't really belong here.

the "club" here is basically for anyone who can claim a significant
connection to the internet industry - beyond that of just a user or
customer. that mostly means ISPs and staff and people in related
businesses, or relevant associations and societies.
